How to Clean Range Cookers
One of the great benefits of owning a range cooker is its sheer size and the number of compartments, zones and sections that they have. This makes it much easier to cook multiple dishes at once and also allows you to store more within the cooker itself.
Of course, for all the benefits, that oven space needs to be cleaned, but how can you clean and maintain a range cooker properly to make sure that it still looks great, and performs to its full capacity?
We’ve broken down the cleaning process into manageable sections, whether you’re planning a deep cleaning session or want to do a little at a time.

Before you begin, we recommend removing all the internal sections like shelves and trays as well as anything removable to speed up the cleaning process.
Since range cookers have many different zones, we thought we’d talk you through cleaning the different areas, starting with the hob and the hob rings:
How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Range Cooker Hob?
It’s best to deep clean your hob every six months as a minimum. However, it’s recommended that you wipe the hob after every use, particularly if you spill something on it. Although be careful and wait for them to cool completely before you wipe them down. Here’s how you do a deep clean:

In most cases, hot, soapy water will suffice. Using a regular cleaning cloth or sponge, wipe the soapy water into the surface to easily deal with most spillages and stains. Once you’ve wiped the cooker, use a kitchen towel to soak up any remaining water.
For stubborn marks that require a bit more attention, a cream cleaner can be used.
Make sure not to use abrasive cleaners or materials like scouring cloths as they can damage the surface of your hob. If there are any stubborn bits of food that won’t wipe away, use a plastic spatula to force them loose.
Top Tip: If you have a ceramic hob you can use a dedicated ceramic cleaner to ensure you get the best results.
How Often Should You Clean Your Oven Racks?
You should tackle your oven racks, or oven shelves, every three months for moderate cooks and every month if you cook three meals a day (or more). Here’s what you do:
How To Clean Your Oven Shelves
If you own a dishwasher, you can pop your racks in with your next load and your job is done.
If you don’t have a dishwasher, you’ll have to take the more traditional route. Use warm soapy water and let the shelves soak for a bit. Then wipe the dirt, grease and grime away with a cloth and rinse.
Once dry, you can pop the racks back in the oven or leave them to the side and continue with your deep clean, replacing them once everything is done.
How Often Should You Clean Your Oven Walls?
Your oven walls (the sides inside the oven) could benefit from a deep clean every three months. This will take about 25-30 minutes depending on how much has built up over the months.
How To Clean Oven Walls?
We recommend the steaming method for an easy, hassle-free shine:
- Add lemon juice or washing up liquid to some cold water (about 150ml), and turn the oven to 100 degrees.
- Place the concoction inside and leave for about 15-20 minutes.
- The water will steam and start to loosen any dirt or grease.
- Let the oven cool, and then wipe the walls with a microfibre cloth or other soft cloth.
How Often Should You Clean Your Oven Floor?
Aim to clean your oven interior floor every three months. Unless, of course, you use your oven multiple times a day, then you may want to clean the floor even more frequently.
How To Clean Your Oven Floor?
If your oven floor is made from enamel, you can use a dedicated enamel cleaner. If you’re unsure what your oven floor is made from, check your manual or Google your cooker’s make and model. Failing that, contact the manufacturer.
When you’re wiping inside the oven, make sure that you don’t move or damage the door seal, as this could affect the oven’s ability to retain heat and will severely damage its performance.
How Often Should You Clean Your Range Cooker Door?
You should aim to clean your range cooker oven door four times a year. The great news is that they are as easy to clean as the other how-to guides in this post.
How Do You Clean A Range Cooker Door?
If your door has no glass, then once again hot soapy water will do the trick. If your oven door is made from enamel, use the enamel cleaner that you can use for the floor to clean the door. Once again, be careful not to displace or damage any seals around the door.
Cleaning oven glass is arguably very important from an aesthetic point of view. The glass allows you to look through to the rest of the oven, so even if the inside of the oven is spotless but the glass is dirty, the entire oven will look like it needs a cleaning.
If like most ovens, the door features a glass window, you can begin cleaning using hot soapy water and a soft cloth. If you need to, a cream cleaner or soft scourer will help remove any stubborn stains.
If you have steam cleaned the oven in advance, any stuck-on grease or oil should have loosened. This will make cleaning the door much easier.
There are many recommended methods for cleaning a glass oven door, but hot soapy water or cream cleaner and a bit of elbow grease should clean it well enough for it to sparkle.
How Often Should You Clean Your Range Cooker Hood?
It’s recommended by Range Cooker that you clean the grease filters in your oven hood every two months, more so if you use it frequently.
How Do You Clean A Range Cooker Hood?
To remove the grease filters, simply push them towards the back while pulling downwards simultaneously. If your hood is made of stainless steel or a painted surface, these should be compatible with your dishwasher – simply put these in with your next load.
If you don’t own a dishwasher, wash these filters with the rest of your washing up using warm soapy water. Take care, though, not to bend these and allow them to dry completely before refitting.
Please note: If your range cooker has an activated charcoal filter, these are not washable and need to be replaced every four months or sooner if you use the hood heavily.
How Often Should You Clean Your Range Cooker Oven Roof?
There are no strict guidelines on how often you clean the roof, however, if you’re using the steaming method mentioned earlier on in this article, it may be easiest to clean the roof at the same time.
How Do You Clean Your Oven Roof?
The roof of your Range Cooker oven is typically made of enamel, so you can clean this using a proprietary oven cleaner where it is stated that it is compatible with enamel.
As we advised in the section about cleaning the floor or your oven, be careful not to damage any seals. Avoid using a nylon scourer or other abrasive materials.
How Often Should You Clean The External Surface of Your Range Cooker Oven?
Because you don’t tend to use the outside of the oven, there isn’t really a need to perform a deep clean periodically. Simply give it a quick wipe-down as and when it is needed.
How Do You Clean The External Surface of Your Oven?
Cleaning the surface of your oven should be easy. As you don’t cook on this part of the oven, the only reason to clean it will be to get rid of day-to-day dust that gathers in your home or any spillages that might occur from time to time.
A damp cloth should be enough to wipe any marks or dirt off the surface of your cleaner, and if you want to dust it a regular dust cloth should suffice. If your surfaces are stainless steel, you might want to use a stainless steel cleaner; however, a damp cloth should work well for non-cooking surfaces.
What Can I Use To Clean A Very Dirty Oven?
Some swear by using baking soda that’s been made into a paste and smeared on the oven to make deep cleaning a breeze.
However, we always recommend checking the material and its reaction to baking soda before using it so that you don’t risk causing irreparable damage.
The same is true if you’re planning to use vinegar or lemon juice.
