Why Should I Organise My American-Style Fridge Freezer?

Before we dive in to the how, let’s look at the why. Keeping your American fridge freezer well organised is important for a number of reasons:

Minimise your food wastage.

Over 7 million tonnes of food gets wasted every year. How many times have you had to throw away food that you forgot was in your fridge freezer? How much money could you have saved over the years if you were able to eat that food before you threw it away? The environmental impact of all that food being wasted is the equivalent of 25% of the pollution that all cars make. And it could line your pockets too.

Safe food storage.

These tips & rules about storing food weren’t just made up. They’re to help you minimise your chance of food poisoning. Reduce your chance of illness by getting organised today.

Home efficiency.

Fed up of wasting time looking for food in your fridge freezer? Can’t find a space to put your leftovers? Tighten up your kitchen with some simple organisation. It may only be a minute or so every time you open the fridge, but those add up. Reduce stress and time-wasting with some good old fashioned logistics.

Because!

Another great reason to organise your fridge freezer is because it just looks better. Our American fridge freezers look fab on the outside, make it look beautiful on the inside too.

How Do You Organise Your Fridge?

This section is going to talk you through how to organise the fridge part of your American-Style fridge freezer. The American fridge gets more usage and as these foods are ‘in play’ in terms of expiration dates and so on, is the only part with positioning rules.

Top Shelves

The top shelf of your American fridge freezer is for ready-to-eat foods. Your leftovers, sandwich meats and so on. This is also a good place for herbs and drinks.

Middle Shelves

The middle section of your fridge is your dairy section. Try and keep cheeses refrigerated in Tupperware containers to prevent them going off sooner and to keep their freshness. This is a good place for your butter, milk and yoghurt too.

Bottom Shelves

The bottom shelf is the coldest part of the fridge. Use this section to store raw meat and fish. It will keep your meat for longer and is important for your health. The juices of raw meat are liable to drip down onto other items if you leave it on the top shelves.  Reduce your risk of infecting yourself by keeping your raw meats at the bottom of your fridge freezer.

Drawers

The crisper drawer is for your fruit, vegetables and salads. These foods are most sensitive to temperature changes and keeping them in this drawer protects them from constant opening doors, keeping them fresher for longer. Be careful, some fruit & veg shouldn’t go in this drawer let alone the fridge at all but we’ll go into that later.

How to organise your American Fridge Freezer

Door Shelves

Your door shelves are exposed to room temperature the most out of the whole fridge, so you need to store items here that are less sensitive to temperature. This is the perfect place for your drinks, sauces, condiments et al.

What’s the Best Way to Organise my Freezer?

The freezer in your American fridge don’t have to abide by the same kind of rules. It’s all going to be roughly the same ballpark of temperature and will keep your food frozen and fresh regardless. However, freezers are very susceptible to being clogged up without some tactical nous.

The average freezer has around £50 worth of food in it, stuck in limbo. Don’t let all this food go to waste and save yourself some money next time you’re missing some ingredients. Here are some tips on how to optimise your freezer:

Make sure you know what you can or can’t freeze.

Lots of people don’t know what can actually be frozen and what can’t. Don’t worry if you don’t, it’s not exactly like you’re taught it at school. The Love Food Hate Waste website has a good guide on it that you can see here. If you need to, write up a list of freezer friendly foods and stick it on the door. It will eventually sink in, and you’ll be freezer-literate in no time.

Wrap and label well.

You’ve just made a roast dinner. There’s chicken left over. You wrap it in foil and put it in the freezer. You soon forget what’s in there, and it blends in with all the other foil-wrapped items. There it stays, until it goes in the bin many months later. Labelling your food is a good way of seeing clearly what you have in stock. Eliminate the guesswork.

Flat freezing.

Are you strapped for space in your freezer? Reserve a shelf in your freezer to create a freezer library. Put down a baking sheet in your freezer, and put any liquid foods like curries, sauces, soups and casseroles into a zip-lock bag and let it freeze. You’ll then be able to stack them on top of each other on the other shelves. No more Tupperware and containers wasting space.

Refrigeration Tips & Hacks

The useful information doesn’t stop there. Here are some more tips, facts & hacks about storing your food in your American fridge freezer that you need to know:

Defrost your fridge freezer regularly.

Defrosting improves the performance, cleanliness and general look of your freezer. Make sure you do it once a year at the very, very least.

Invest in some baskets.

Having labelled baskets in your fridge and freezer for smaller, loose items is a great way to keep them in one place, and keep everything working efficiently.

Keep track of what you have in your fridge freezer.

We don’t always have the time to check what we already have when go for a food shop. Consider a whiteboard or blackboard to go next to or on your American-Style fridge freezer. Keep note of what’s in stock. You can see, at a glance, when you need to go to the shops and exactly what you need.

Designate a freezer weekend once a month.

Once every month, plan your weekend’s (or week’s) meals making sure you use everything that’s in your freezer. You’ll cut the cost of that weekly shop dramatically and free up space in your freezer.

And finally, the 10 foods you should never refrigerate:

garlic bulb

Garlic

It reduces its lifespan and will cause it to sprout.

red onion

Onions

Don’t throw any leftover onion away. It will keep for 7 days in a sealed container. Make sure you have the container as if not it can cause other food in your fridge to go off.

coffee beans

Coffee Beans

The beans will lose their quality and flavour.

olive oil

Olive Oil

In the fridge, olive oil solidifies.

banana

Bananas

Refrigerating bananas halts their ripening process.

tomato

Tomatoes

These will lose their flavour. If you have already done this, let them come back to room temperature before eating.

bread

Bread

Putting bread in the fridge causes it to go stale faster. Do put bread in the freezer however. In fact, we recommend it.

honey

Honey

It has an everlasting shelf life (more or less) so there’s absolutely no need. Save some space.

potato

Potatoes

The cold temperature can turn potato starch into sugar, affecting their flavours.

peanut butter sandwich

Peanut Butter

Organic peanut butter often needs to be refrigerated. Mass-produced peanut butter often has enough preservatives to keep it on the shelf for a long, long time.
