How to Level Your Fridge

There’s a knack to levelling your fridge, and although you may only need to do this a handful of times in your life, it’s a useful bit of knowledge to have and when you’ve done it once you’ll be able to do it again and again. Levelling your fridge is something you’ll do when you install a new model. You might find your new fridge doesn’t need any adjustments, but if it does, we’re going to tell you how you do it.

If you’re interested in seeing our range of fridges, head to the Refrigeration section to check them out, alongside our freezers and fridge freezers. We also have dedicated sections for our wine coolers and American-Style fridge freezers if you want to have a look at those too.

Why Should You Need to Level Your Fridge?

There’s an obvious reason for why your fridge should be level, and that’s so nothing rolls out of it when opened. But that’s not the only downside to having a lopsided fridge. So before we go into the how, it’s important to cover the why.

Because refrigerators work by pumping a coolant through a loop. It is through this process that heat is pushed outside and your fridge is kept cold. If your fridge isn’t level then the coolant can gather, meaning your pump has to work harder to maintain the desired temperature. As a result your fridge is less efficient and then your ice maker may well suffer as a result.

So it’s not just a case of stopping the contents from rolling around, but so that your fridge doesn’t use any more energy than it has to to keep your food fresh and tasty.

How Do You Level A Fridge?

So, here’s how you can level your refrigerator to ensure it’s at its most efficient:

  1. Remove the grill found at the bottom of the unit. This may require you to remove screws but in most cases, it will have a quick release mechanism.
  2. Once you’ve removed the grill, you will see height-adjustable legs on either side, or rollers. The mechanism by which you adjust the height should be easy to spot, it’s often done by rotating the legs. Clockwise for higher, anti-clockwise for lower.
  3. If your fridge has rollers, look for an adjustable screw by the roller. It is likely you will need a screwdriver to tighten or loosen the screw. Tightening will raise the fridge and vice versa.

That is pretty much all you need to do. Look under the bottom grill and adjust the legs. There are some other useful things to know. You may need to get someone to help you with this, by tilting the refrigerator back, giving you greater access to the levelling legs.

You will find that you may need to do this a couple of times, as it’s hard to tell when your fridge is level whilst you’re adjusting it. Use a spirit level to judge if it’s level, many modern smartphones have an app that can tell you if something is level; if you don’t have one in the house.

Another way of telling if your fridge is levelled correctly is by looking at the door. Open your fridge door, and let go. If the fridge door closes very slowly, then it’s level. If it goes very fast, or doesn’t move at all then you may need to get in there and sort it out.
