1. How to Tackle Your Kitchen Sink
Kitchen sinks are magnets for germs and bacteria. Even when they appear to be clean they can still be festering with nasties.
Wiping your sink down after every use is essential to stop the accumulation of harmful bacteria. Try using a mixture of baking soda and water to do this.
For an extra deep clean fill your sink with hot water and a cup of white vinegar and leave it to soak for 30 minutes.
2. Don’t Forget the Sponge
Those innocent looking sponges we use to wash our dishes and clean our sinks and surfaces harbour huge amounts of bacteria and we spread them around our kitchens with every wipe.
Easily keep them bacteria free by microwaving them for 1 minute whilst damp. Easy peasy!
3. Rid Your Drain of Debris
Clogged sinks can smell and also affect water drainage! Flush them out using baking soda and vinegar. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain followed by 1 cup of heated vinegar.
The volcano like reaction breaks down the food and debris lodged in your sink. Leave it overnight for the best result and rinse out with 2 cups of hot water in the morning.
Another great solution to keeping your sink clean and tidy is purchasing a waste disposal unit. An extremely useful addition to any kitchen, a waste disposal unit keeps odour and food waste at bay.
4. Steam Clean Your Microwave Using Lemons
Keeping your microwave clean is easy. Simply place a microwavable dish 1/3 filled with water and lemon slices inside and heat on full power for 3-5 minutes.
The steam will soften any dried on food making it easy to wipe clean and the lemon will leave it smelling clean and fresh.
5. Sanitise Your Worktops and Surfaces
Work tops are used and abused everyday so it’s important to keep them clean and tidy to ensure that when food is prepared it is not contaminated with germs.
Try making your own multipurpose cleaner using a mixture of half water and half white vinegar.
Vinegar is a great disinfectant, it kills most moulds and bacteria. You could even add a squeeze of lemon juice for a fresh, just cleaned scent.
6. Baked On Oven Grime
Many conventional oven cleaners are loaded with toxic ingredients. Try tackling that burnt on grease and grime using a simple baking soda and water solution. Coat the inside of your oven with your baking soda and water paste, let it sit overnight, and then watch that dirt and grime remove with ease as you wipe it off with a damp sponge in the morning.
Remember to line your oven with foil before cooking to protect it from spills and leaks. This will make your cleaning process much easier in the future!
7. Keeping your Fridge Clean and Odour Free
Did you know using soap or detergent to clean your fridge can leave behind a fragrance which is then absorbed by your food? Try wiping down the shelves of your fridge using 2 table spoons of baking soda and hot water instead to ensure your food is kept fresh and tasting as it should.
Baking soda is also great for eliminating any bad smells. Store a box of baking soda at the bottom of your fridge to absorb any lingering smells and keep your fridge smelling fresh for up to six months.
8. No More Bin Odour
Kitchen bins are notoriously bad smelling! A quick wipe with a water and vinegar solution after emptying your rubbish is a great way to stay on top of the bacteria build up. Sprinkle a few table spoons of baking soda in the bottom before fitting your bin liner to absorb any leaks that may occur and combat odour. Be sure to replace the baking soda every two weeks to keep your bin fresh as a daisy.
9. Dishwasher Perfect
After a while you may notice that your dishes are not as clean as they used to be after a cycle in your dishwasher.
Give your dishwasher a little TLC. Whilst empty, try putting a cup filled with baking soda or white vinegar on a short cycle in your dishwasher and you’ll notice your dishes coming out sparkling clean again. You’ll thank us later!
10. Hob Spillage
A great trick for cleaning any spills on your hob is to throw a handful of salt on it as it happens. This will absorb the liquid and aid the cleaning process when scrubbing it off once the mess has cooled down.
11. Floor Care
Choosing the right floor cleaner is essential. The wrong one can not only leave your floor feeling sticky but also damage the surface.
On sealed wood, tiles or laminate flooring try mixing one part hot water to one part white vinegar and giving it a thorough mop. The vinegar will not only sanitise your floor but also leave it with a brilliant shine.
An alternative is to invest in a steam mop. Steam kills 99% of all bacteria and can be used on almost all surfaces.
